The purpose of the SCMS program is to improve the academic achievement, retention, and graduation rates of our students, with the goal of preparing them to transfer to four-year institutions or successfully enter the workforce.  This will be achieved by furnishing mentors who will provide one-on-one supportive relationships and offer advice, insight, and guidance to mentees regarding academic and professional pursuits and general life matters. scms_student

Student Mentees

The SCMS program is available to any interested full- or part-time student enrolled in an academic program that results in an associate degree or a certificate of mastery.  Additionally, students must be willing to work hard and be held accountable by SCMS program staff and mentors.

Mentor Criteria

Mentors can be from any industry and must be able to commit the time required.  We ask mentors to contact mentees regularly by email, phone call, or text message, and we encourage them to meet face-to-face with their mentees when needed.   We will provide materials to mentors to supplement their mentee engagement.  In keeping with OCCC policies, mentors will be required to consent to a background check.  These criteria are designed to set the foundation for a productive and successful mentor/mentee partnership.

Expectations

We expect our students to improve their academic performance, persist through college, complete their academic programs, and graduate.

We expect students’ interaction with mentors will provide insight into their areas of professional interest and strengthen the launch of their post-graduation plans.

We expect students to transfer to four-year institutions or enter the workforce fully aware of their abilities and capabilities and able to navigate their path to self-fulfillment and self-sustainability.
