Program Overview

Oklahoma City Community College history students gain insight into how past civilizations and cultures evolved and how their experiences shaped values, beliefs, decisions, and traditions for centuries.

Graduates of the OCCC history program will be able to:

Describe the major factors contributing to the growth of the United States, including political, economic, and territorial growth.
Identify events in American history from 1400 to 1877 that shaped the development of the United States, in such areas as revolution, geographic and social mobility, political reform, government precedents, and war.
Explain events in American history from 1877 to present that continue to shape the United States, focusing on U.S. involvement in world affairs as well as conflicts of class, immigration, and racial and gender equality.
Analyze the development of major world civilizations, including the effects of political movements, intellectual and cultural trends, territorial expansion and migration, ethnicity, race, social class, religion, and gender on those civilizations.
Prepare research materials and present their findings at an acceptable college level.

Potential careers for history majors include archivist, historic preservationist, museum curator, educator, researcher, journalist, attorney, law enforcement official, advocate, writer/editor, librarian, paralegal, politician, librarian, paralegal, politician, and more!
